BGCI-US
Botanic Gardens Conservation International–US (BGCI-US) serves as a bridge between North American botanic gardens, conservation partners, and the global BGCI network to advance plant conservation. We connect people, knowledge, data, and resources to support collaborative action for threatened plants, strengthen conservation practices, and increase the collective impact of botanic gardens. Through these partnerships, BGCI-US helps ensure the world’s plant diversity is valued, protected, and contributing to a healthy planet.

What We Do
BGCI-US provides plant conservation information and tools to botanic gardens. Using BGCI’s GardenSearch, PlantSearch, GlobalTreeSearch, and ThreatSearch, we guide collections development and planning at the individual garden, regional, national, and global levels.
BGCI-US implements our vision by:
- Providing tools and information to gardens
- Building collections and conserving plants
- Advocating for gardens and plants
- Collaborating on conservation leadership with the US public garden community
U.S. Action Plant for Plant Conservation
The American Public Gardens Association, BGCI-US, the Center for Plant Conservation and the United States Botanic Garden are leading the development of the U.S. Action Plan for Plant Conservation, an initiative to adapt and implement the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) within the U.S. botanic garden community.
The following actions have been identified as the highest priorities for U.S. Botanic Gardens based on a survey distributed to over 200 botanic garden professionals. These form the basis of six working groups.
- Data Tools for Mainstreaming Plant Conservation
- Ecological Restoration
- Government Relations, Engagement and Policy
- Innovative Funding Solutions for Plant Conservation
- Native Plant Use in Climate Mitigation and Adaptation
- Plant Species & Genetic Diversity Conservation
Working Groups are actively developing draft contributions to the U.S. Action Plan for Plant Conservation, aligned with the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. The objective of this work is to arrive at an October 2026 Summit with well-developed proposals that can be discussed, refined, and collectively endorsed.
The Summit is open to anyone interested in contributing to the development of the Action Plan. Whether or not you are serving on a Working Group, we encourage you to attend and participate in the discussions that will help shape the final Plan.

Global Conservation Consortia
BGCI-US supports the work of the Global Conservation Consortia by strengthening collaboration, coordinating conservation initiatives, developing guidance and resources, and building the capacity of partners to conserve threatened plant diversity worldwide.
Illegal Plant Trade
BGCI-US supports the Illegal Plant Trade Coalition through network coordination and collaborative initiatives.
