About the College of Horticulture Mudigere
The college of Horticulture, Mudigere is located in the central part of Western Ghats of India. The Western Ghats of India is among the ecologically richest regions and has around 4000 species of higher plants of which 500 species have medicinal value. Plants that were very common in Western Ghats when they were first studied have got into the IUCN Red List over the years. In the absence of cultivation practices, there is destructive harvesting for various plant parts like stem/roots which leads to their depletion from the wild. In recent years, the growing demand for herbal products has also lead to a quantum jump in volume of plant material traded within and outside the country. Consequently, the danger is looming large with respect to threat to genetic stocks and to the diversity of medicinal plants. Conservation of Rare,Endangered & Threatened(RET) medicinal plants is absolutely essential. Hence the field Gene bank of RET medicinal plants has been established at College of Horticulture, Mudigere
