About the Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences
Malabar Botanical Garden, Kozhikode, Kerala State, India, located in the panoramic, serene suburban area of Calicut (Kozhikode) city (8 Km from Railway Station and 25 Km from Airport) is renowned for its excellent fresh water plant collections of India. The garden sprawls over 16 ha area with 6 ha wetland which transforms into a placid lake during monsoon, ideal for wetland flora conservation. The climate is tropical with 3000 mm annual rainfall, high humidity and short summer (Feb-May) with maximum temperature up to 320C. The wetland gradually elevates to a 45 m high lateritic hillock facilitating niche for a wide range of plants. The Malabar Botanical Garden has 8 green houses for primitive plants (mosses and ferns), shade loving plants, orchids, medicinal plants, aquatic plants, etc.) Malabar Botanical Garden is a centre of Research in Biodiversity conservation and related topics.
