Native Tree Species (NTS) web-based hub
NTS web-hub
The Native Tree Species (NTS) web-based hub aims to facilitate access to information held in relevant databases and to be an open sharing tool for ‘What to plant where’ resources to support NTS sourcing and seed collection, propagation, growing and planting, including opensource seed zone maps and potential vegetation maps.
Native Tree Species Nursery Directory
Under the Bonn Challenge, Tanzania has pledged to restore 5.2mha of degraded land by 2030. Tanzania is very rich in biodiversity with over 1750 native tree species (NTS) but progress to integrate them into planting has been slow due to lack of knowledge and capacity related to NTS restoration. A number of constraints facing NTS in Tanzania have led to NTS seeds and seedlings being either unavailable or expensive to buy and propagate. BGCI, through funding from the Darwin Initiative for its project ‘Diversifying Tanzania’s Native Tree Species for People and Biodiversity’ has developed a Nursery Directory for Tanzania. The Nursery Directory is a centralised digital platform of nurseries growing native trees species in Tanzania. The directory is designed to make it easier for restoration practitioners, conservationists, and community groups to find reliable sources of native tree seedlings. By showcasing where native tree species nurseries are located, the species they produce, and how to contact them, the directory bridges a long-standing information gap that has hindered large-scale, species-appropriate restoration.
The Nursery Directory:
- Improves access to quality native plant material.
- Strengthens the restoration value chain by connecting nurseries and practitioners.
- Enhances native tree species conservation and reduces pressure on wild populations.
- Tracks supply trends and production capacities.
- Raises the profile of nurseries producing native tree species.
- Encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders.
Together, these efforts will contribute to sustainable landscape restoration and biodiversity recovery across Tanzania. The nursery directory also links to the Web Based Hub where seed and seedlings suppliers and restoration practitioners can find useful information on propagation, planting and growing native tree species.
