Discovering the forest in miniature: an introduction to the lichens and bryophytes present on an interpretation trail of Jardín Botánico de Ushuaia (JBU)

Project Status: Completed 2025
Funded by: The Global Botanic Garden Fund
Project Partner: Jardin Botanico de Ushuaia

Introduction

This project is the first phase of a long-term initiative to study lichens and bryophytes at JBU, including the recognition of their importance in the garden and the need for theses species to be conserved and incorporated into the JBU educational offer.

Project Goals

To document and identify the main species of lichens and bryophytes present in the “miniature forest” and to develop specific content and teaching resources to help the recognition of these species- including their characteristics, ecological role and importance. The area will be protected and showcased with signs specific to support visitor engagement and strengthen JBU’s environmental education program and improved visitor pathways.

Key Achievements

The project successfully surveyed and documented 27 species of lichens and bryophytes within a defined area, creating a strong baseline for future research and conservation.

Educational goals were achieved through the development of digital materials, identification cards, and improved visitor engagement tools, all integrated into the garden’s programs. Additionally, the site was enhanced with protective measures, signage, and redesigned visitor pathways, improving both conservation and the overall educational experience.
