Study of the responses of seedlings of threatened and native species from the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado to climate change scenarios

Project goal

This project aims to evaluate the growth of endangered and native species from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest in different climate change scenarios. To better understand these species response at these scenarios, Jardim Botânico Inhotim proposed to use a growth chamber which controls temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration.

Key achievements

In one year of the project, Jardim Botânico Inhotim managed to set up three experiments (altering the CO2 concentration, air humidity, and irrigation) in the growth chamber. The results of the first scenario have already been analysed and published at the 72nd National Congress of Botany. Data generated about native and threatened plant growth in climate change scenarios found different responses of species to these scenarios, indicating that there will be changes in the composition and structure of the forest in the future. The results from these experiments will be published soon.
