Recife Botanical Garden Celebrates Its 47th Anniversary

On August 1, the Recife Botanical Garden (RBG) celebrates its 47th anniversary as one of the city’s most important environmental landmarks.

Founded in 1979, the institution plays a vital role in protecting the biodiversity of Brazil’s native flora, particularly endangered plant species, through conservation initiatives, scientific research, and environmental education.

It is the only Botanical Garden in Northern and Northeastern Brazil to hold the prestigious “Category A” classification awarded by the National Commission of Botanical Gardens, under Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment.

The 47th anniversary will be celebrated on Saturday, August 1, 2026, with the planting of a Brazilwood tree (Paubrasilia echinata), an endangered species, and a special ecological walk honoring the renowned Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, internationally recognized for his pioneering use of native Brazilian plants and for designing dozens of protected historic public gardens throughout Recife.

This celebration also marks several important achievements for environmental conservation at the Recife Botanical Garden, including:

* The acquisition of a seed storage chamber dedicated to endangered plant species;
* The resumption of invasive alien species control within the arboretum;
* The reopening of seedling production at the forest nursery;
* The expansion of the technical staff;
* The installation of a security camera monitoring system; and
* The launch of the Garden’s updated institutional website.

Visitors can also explore the fascinating world of plant biology through new microscopes, discover the Meliponary featuring native stingless bees, enjoy educational theater performances and lectures, and visit the greenhouse housing botanical collections of orchids, cacti, bromeliads, and endangered plant species.

Admission and parking are free of charge.

Throughout the year, the Recife Botanical Garden welcomes schools, universities, NGOs, companies, researchers, and visitors from across Brazil and around the world to experience the richness of native plant biodiversity and learn about the essential role of nature in sustaining life on Earth.
