GCC Knowledge Hub (TechTalk): Assessment to Action – Conservation Status of the World’s Trees

Trees underpin life on Earth, yet around one in three tree species is threatened with extinction. That stark finding comes from the Global Tree Assessment (GTA), the largest conservation assessment ever undertaken.

Launched in 2015 and led by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) with the IUCN SSC Global Tree Specialist Group, the GTA has brought together more than 1,000 experts to produce IUCN Red List assessments for nearly 50,000 tree species. Trees now make up over a quarter of all assessments on the Red List. But knowing which species are at risk is only the first step. The real question is what happens next.

• On Tuesday 17 November, BGCI hosts two online webinars (FREE), Assessment to Action: Conservation Status of the World’s Trees. With Malin Rivers and Emily Beech of the GTA team, with moderator Dylan Fuller of BGCI’s Global Conservation Consortia, will show how GTA data pinpoint the species and places where action is most urgent.

They’ll also introduce BGCI’s Conservation Action Tracker, which brings together extinction risk, threats and existing conservation efforts to reveal gaps and guide priorities.
