A new information brief, Operationalisation of the Conservation Production Orchard Approach, has been published, providing guidance on an innovative approach to conserving tree genetic resources while supporting their sustainable use.
Conservation Production Orchards (CPOs) offer an opportunity to link the long-term conservation of tree genetic diversity with the production and use of tree germplasm. By integrating conservation and production objectives, the approach aims to support the availability of genetically diverse planting material while contributing to the conservation of threatened and valuable tree species.
Developed through collaboration between international experts and organisations, including Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), the information brief provides a framework for putting the CPO approach into practice. It highlights the importance of connecting conservation efforts with practical applications, helping ensure that tree genetic resources are both safeguarded and sustainably utilised.
The publication is particularly relevant to botanic gardens, tree conservation practitioners, seed banks and restoration organisations seeking to strengthen the links between ex situ conservation, sustainable use and ecological restoration.
