This work is part of a wider BGCI Darwin funded project: Improving community sustainable natural resource management of Mount Mulanje. This project aims to develop sustainable livelihood options from native plants and fungi from the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve as alternatives to current practices that damage mountain ecosystems, reducing biodiversity and livelihood opportunities.

As part of this project, the BGCI education team are working with the in-country partners to explore current behaviours and practices for charcoal and firewood use around/in the Miombo forest reserve that are contributing to loss of important habitat. We are training the partners in behaviour change using a behaviour-centred design framework that has been developed by RARE – specifically for conservation programmes.

This is a three year project 2022 – 2024.
