Today we publish the new Global Strategy for Plant Conservation Summary Document. This document is a concise summary of the new GSPC Complementary Actions and the rationales behind each of the new Actions.
This document aims to support the implementation of the new GSPC Actions which were adopted by the CBD in October 2024 and have an implementation window from 2024-2030. The document explores previous iterations of the GSPC, including matching the GSPC Targets from 2010-2020 to the new GSPC Actions and also the new reporting process for the GSPC. This process means that non-state actors (e.g. botanic gardens, plant conservation NGO’s) when reporting for the GSPC will also be contributing to the overall reporting, and monitoring for the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
All gardens can be involved with the GSPC and many existing garden initiatives and work supports the GSPC. The summary document can be used as a tool to map existing institutional strategies to the GSPC and identify which Actions align with existing work within your organisation. It can also be used to identify priority Actions for individuals and organisations, within which goals can be set.
The publication of the summary document this week also marks a renewal for the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation (GPPC). The GPPC was established in 2004 to support the implementation of the GSPC. The Partnership have since been involved in developing new iterations of the GSPC and undertaken focused work on the GSPC targets, ultimately leading to the success of the previous GSPC implementation periods. For example, the GPPC set up a working group and consortia which led to the development of the World Flora Online (WFO). This online portal provides a baseline of knowledge on the world’s plant diversity and is supported by a consortium of over 50 botanical institutions worldwide.
With the adoption of the new GSPC, the GPPC is being renewed to provide continued support for implementation. This includes operationalising a new Terms of Reference for partnership members and setting up new working groups (or Action Teams) to bring like-minded organisations and individuals together to enhance the progress of specific GSPC Actions.
It is a great time to become involved with the GPPC. We are just at the beginning of mobilising activities and there are many opportunities for collaboration. If you would like to find out about becoming a member of the GPPC please email policy@bgci.org.
Please enjoy this new GSPC Summary Document. We hope it inspires renewed action for the GSPC.
The GPPC Secretariat would like to thank Missouri Botanical Garden for supporting the design and printing of this document.
