As part of the project “Ex situ conservation of two West African endemic and endangered species (Eremospatha dransfieldii Sunderl. and Gambeya azaguieana (J.Miège) Aubrév. & Pellegr.) in Ivory Coast”, implemented by the Jardin des Palmiers of Divo with financial support from BGCI through the Global Botanic Garden Fund (Grant GBGF/2024/06), field surveys have been conducted to locate additional individuals of this highly threatened rattan palm.
During these missions, new clumps of Eremospatha dransfieldii was discovered in the Hein Classified Forest, southeast Côte d’Ivoire, representing a significant finding for the species’ conservation.
Unfortunately, some of the individuals previously identified for phenological monitoring have recently been destroyed due to the establishment of cocoa plantations. This highlights the urgent need for conservation actions to mitigate habitat loss and ensure the survival of this rare species.
