Korea National Arboretum (KNA) announced the publication of the Korea Strategy for Plant Conservation 2030 (KSPC 2030), a national framework to strengthen plant diversity conservation and sustainable use amid accelerating global biodiversity loss.

Plants are fundamental to ecosystem stability, providing essential services such as climate regulation, food security, medicinal resources, and cultural value. However, plant diversity is rapidly declining due to development pressures, habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change, underscoring the need for a coordinated national response.

The KSPC 2030 aligns with the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Building on Korea’s plant conservation efforts since 2008, the strategy reflects accumulated experience in legal frameworks, native flora documentation, endangered species protection, genetic resource management, and public engagement.

Developed through consultations with government agencies, experts, and practitioners, the KSPC 2030 sets out 21 strategic tasks under: conserving and restoring plant diversity, promoting sustainable use, and strengthening knowledge, participation, and policy foundations. The strategy will be implemented in coordination with Korea’s National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and will guide arboreta, research institutions, local governments, and civil society in advancing plant-centered conservation toward a sustainable future.
