Itera Botanic Garden, managed by UPA Konservasi Flora Sumatera, has once again achieved national recognition. After receiving 3rd place nationally in 2023 for development and management of botanic gardens from the Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN), in 2025 Itera Botanic Garden has successfully retained its position as the 3rd Best Regional Botanic Garden in Indonesia with significant achievements.
The award was presented by BRIN during the Temu Pendamping Kebun Raya Indonesia in Jakarta on Thursday, 13 November 2025. On this occasion, the award was received directly by the Head of UPA Konservasi Flora Sumatera, Alawiyah, S.P., M.Hut. At the same event, the Rector of Itera, also served as a speaker with the topic “The Role of Universities in Promoting Conservation Efforts and Their Linkages with Sustainable Development.” In his session, the Rector highlighted the strategic role of universities in developing botanic gardens as centres of conservation, research, and education that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Although relatively young, having been inaugurated on 8 June 2022, Itera Botanic Garden has already managed to compete at the national level. Its success in maintaining 3rd place since 2023 confirms its reputation as a botanic garden with visionary management and wide-reaching impact. Prior to the announcement, BRIN conducted monitoring and evaluation of 48 regional botanic gardens across Indonesia using a range of assessment indicators. The evaluation process involved an independent panel that reviewed aspects such as governance, management, conservation, education, research, as well as the commitment of local governments and managing institutions.
“Itera Botanic Garden has once again been named the 3rd best botanic garden in Indonesia in terms of development and management. The assessment placed strong emphasis on commitment, and Itera was considered able to maintain commitment from the leadership level down to technical implementation, reflected in dedicated budget allocation, supportive policies, and consistent development efforts,” explained Alawiyah. In line with its growing role in national and international conservation networks, Itera Botanic Garden officially joined Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) on 6 May 2025, further strengthening its position as part of the global community of botanic gardens. Itera Rector Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Pugeg Aryantha also expressed his appreciation for this achievement. “Through Itera Botanic Garden, we are already contributing to ten sustainability agendas (Sustainable Development Goals/SDGs). Going forward, we hope this garden will continue to strengthen its role as a living laboratory for the academic community and for society at large,” he said.
