In collaboration with the Jardins botaniques de France et des pays francophones (JBFPF) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is working to revive the African Botanic Gardens Network (ABGN). Originally established in 2002, the network has been largely inactive in recent years.

As part of this effort, BGCI and JBFPF will host a full-day ABGN meeting on Sunday, 3rd August 2025, during the AETFAT Conference in Ghana. The goal of this meeting is to review the aims of the ABGN, share current projects being implemented by members and how BGCI and Jardins botaniques de France et des pays francophones (JBFPF) can support the network. The meeting will include a session on how to increase botanic garden involvement in supplying native tree supply. An update on BGCI’s new strategy and the support it provides to regional networks like ABGN, including membership benefits, the Global Botanic Garden Fund, and botanic garden accreditation will also be presented.

Participants can expect an engaging day of presentations, small group work, and open discussions focused on overcoming shared challenges and identifying ways to work together more effectively. This workshop is aimed at representatives working for or with an interest in setting up a botanic garden, but everyone with interest can participate.
