The role is that of Plant Health Officer at Kew, which is part of the Plant Health and Science Support team. The main aim of the role is to protect Kew’s Living Collection plants from the growing threats of pests and diseases, by complying with UK Plant Health legislation and designing and implementing strict biosecurity measures. Advising and training staff is an essential part of the role.

The role provides support for the Head of Plant Health and Quarantine, in:

  • Running and maintaining the Quarantine House
  • Providing tours of the Quarantine House
  • Caring for plants in the Quarantine House
  • Following procedures imposed by Kew’s DEFRA Scientific Authorisation
  • Providing advice to staff on biosecurity requirements and UK Plant Health legislation and their impact on bringing plant material into Kew
  • Carrying out inspections of all incoming plant material and recording details
  • Providing training and advice on plant health to Horticulture staff
