About the BOTANIC GARDEN OF INDIAN REPUBLIC

Botanic Garden of Indian Republic (BGIR) was established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Govt. of India primarily for ex-situ conservation of endemic and threatened plants of the country alongwith related scientific research, environmental education, training, awareness and recreation purposes in accordance with the requirement of 1st Convention on Biological Diversity held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during 'Earth Summit' in 1992. The total land area of the garden is 163.79 acre. At present, more than 10,500 individuals of about 900 plant species brought from 23 states of the country have been conserved in different sections/areas like Economic Plant, Green Belt/Woodland, Fruit, Medicinal Plant, Cactus & Succulents, Nurseries and Water bodies. The seeds of 269 plant species including Geodorum appendiculatum Griff. endemic to Assam and Andaman are conserved in Seed Bank. In water bodies of the garden, the Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Sowerby, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. and 5 different species of Nymphaea L. which flowers 5 different coloured flowers i.e. Red, Blue, Purple, White, and Yellow as well as a 'Map of India' (size length 83 ft and width 75 ft) made by live plants, lush green carpet grass and endemic and threatened plants of the country are main attraction to the visitors like students, researchers, scientists and nature lovers. Ceratopteris thalictroides (L.) Brongniart a Fern naturally grew in this garden. Not only this, the congenial condition may have been developed by the plantation/enrichment with the flora of the country, naturally, so many fauna are also attracted, harbouring and multiplying which need to be inventorised.
