About the Highdown Gardens
A plantsman's garden on the chalk soils of the UK's South Downs. The garden is home to the National Collection of the plants of Sir Frederick Stern (1884 - 1967), botanist, collector, enthusiast and writer. The collection is valuable due to a mixture of rarity and heritage. After the death of Sir Frederick the garden was bequeathed to Worthing Borough Council and is now the recipient of Heritage Lottery funding, fuelling a project to assess, protect and propagate the collection.
