About the F. Carroll Sargent Arboretum at Greenlawn Cemetery (Legacy Collection)

The Sargent Arboretum is Massachusett's first accredited public cemetery arboretum. Its management and development are a collaborative effort of the City of Salem, Friends of Greenlawn Cemetery, Inc., and Salem State University.

The plants uploaded to PlantSearch are the legacy collection that dates to the 1940s as determined from a 1942 plant list and 1948 newspaper articles written by the curator. Most of the trees on the property now date to that period. 475 taxa were included in the 1940s collection. More than 100 are rare at other BGCI associated sites, and more than 80 are not recorded at any other BGCI site. There are more than a dozen taxa of apples and crabapples that are modern relatives of crop species and have yet to be identified. The first modern inventory is underway.
