About the Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal Water Garden

Superb 18th-century landscaped water garden created by John Aislabie. Now the least-altered Georgian "green" garden in England, with elegant ornamental lakes, avenues, temples and cascades providing a succession of unforgettable vistas in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. The landscape incorporates the spectacular remains of 12th-century Fountains Abbey, the Elizabethan Fountains Hall and a medieval deer park covering a further 120ha, where William Burgess 19th-century St Mary's Church provides a dramatic focal point. Made a World Heritage Site in 1986.
