About the Maymont Foundation

Mission:
Maymont Foundation will preserve and celebrate Maymont as a museum and park for the pleasure and education of everyone.

In 1886, Major and Mrs. James Dooley acquired a former dairy farm on the James River and transformed the 100-acre tract into an American estate that reflected the opulence and extravagance of the Gilded Age. Their home, Maymont, was bequeathed to the City of Richmond in 1925. Today the estate is appreciated as an unusually complete example of an American country place of the Gilded Age in which magnificent landscaping was an essential part.
