Covering 25 hectares, Anderson Gardens include fine specimens of tropical trees and palms, grand avenues and the World Cycad Collection. Originally planted as an arboretum, the collections are developing with a strong emphasis on native and dry tropical plants. With substantial botanical credentials, including the Cape York Peninsula Collection, one of the world's largest collections of Pandanus and the Tropical Orchard, everyday visitors as well as botanical enthusiasts can enjoy the diverse range of flora in Anderson Gardens.

The plant collection in Queens Gardens features many interesting and unusual species. Emphasis has been placed on colonial ornamental plants with either colourful, attractive foliage or flowers. Many magnificent trees grace the gardens, several of which are original plantings dating back to 1870. An interesting collection of palms are planted in the Palm Lawn; several interesting and unusual species are exhibited.

The Palmetum collection contains over 360 species in 130 genera; several rare and threatened in their natural habitat. The palm family Arecaceae comprises about 2400 species in 190 genera. Approximately 60 species of palms are native to Australia; most are represented. The palm collection is among the top ten public collections in the world. Significant collections of Pandanaceae and cacti and succulents are also displayed in the gardens.
