About the Bergius Botanic Garden

The Bergius Botanic Garden is ideally situated at Brunnsviken, an inlet of the Baltic Sea. The garden is part of the city’s national park, protected by law to preserve natural and cultural values for the future.

The primary objective of the Bergius Botanic Garden is to support teaching and research about plant diversity, and the garden is also a recreational spot and a source of botanical knowledge for all its visitors. With a history stretching back to the 18th century, the garden is today owned and managed by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and Stockholm University.

The Bergius Herbarium (herbarium acronym SBT) with 18 000 accessions collected mainly during the 18th century. Professor Bergius wrote Plantae Capensis (1767) based on parts of this material. The Bergius Herbarium is available at the website www.bergianska.se.

The Garden Herbarium comprises about 40 000 accesssions from botanical gardens in Europe and North America.

There are also herbaria compiled by former directors of the Bergius Botanic Garden, e.g., professors Veit Wittrock and Rudolf Florin.

    Living collections
We have a large and well maintained systematic area with perennial and annual plants, and several plant geographic areas exemplifying Northern Hemisphere biotas, including some unique Swedish environmental types.

Among important collections of ligneous species are plants originating from seeds collected in the Far East by e.g. J.F. Rock (1927), D. Hummel (1930), and H. Smith (1934-36).

We have two conservatories, the Victoria greenhouse with tropical water plants including the giant water lily, and Edvard Anderson greenhouse with plants from Mediterranean climates and a collection of tropical and subtropical plants.
