About the Tallinn Botanic Garden
The Garden covers the area of 26ha. The relief here has mostly been formed during the Litorina stage on the Baltic Sea about 5000 years ago, together with the evolution of the original Pirita river valley. So ancient coastal dunes, bordering the valley from the North, actually make up the most outstanding part of the relief. The altitude reaches 24 metres in the heath garden. Damming up of old armlets and ditches has enriched the landscape of the Botanic Garden with nine ponds. Natural vegetation in Kloostrimetsa has survived in fragments and is subject to strong human impact. 484 species of vascular plants have been listed in the spontaneous flora of the Garden; most abundant in species are heath and nemoral forests here. The TBG territory remains in the Pirita Valley landscape conservation area, established in 1957. The garden has a focus on native plantlife, and ecosystems from the Americas.
