Red Lists

BGCI manages a diverse Red List programme working with partners to assess the conservation status of the world’s plant species.

Red List assessments highlight the extinction risk faced by plant species in the wild, raise awareness for the need to protect them and aid prioritisation for plant conservation efforts.

Currently, plant species are under represented on the IUCN Red List of Threatened species, limiting the conservation action that can be targeted towards them. As of April 2019, fewer than 10% of known plant diversity (28,265 species of plant) was assessed on the IUCN Red List (2019.1). Of these species, over 13,000 (<45%) species are already considered threatened with extinction in the wild (assessed as Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable). This means the conservation status of the majority of plant species is unknown, which leads to threatened plants species, and plant conservation in general, being overlooked in national, regional and international conservation planning. BGCI works to address this information gap as one of the lead providers of plant conservation assessments to the IUCN Red List.

BGCI is a member of the IUCN Red List Partnership. We also host the secretariat for the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group (GTSG), with whom we jointly coordinate the Global Tree Assessment (GTA). This initiative aims to provide conservation assessments for all the world’s tree species by 2020 and is the largest biodiversity assessment ever undertaken at a species level. Over the last twenty years, our collaboration with GTSG has produced 15 Red List publications for trees and since the launch of GTA in 2015, over 3,500 Red List assessments for trees have been published on the IUCN Red List. This effort directly contributes to GSPC Target 2, which calls for ‘an assessment of the conservation status of all known plant species as far as possible to guide conservation action by 2020’.

Furthering plant conservation assessment efforts helps prioritise the species identified as most at risk of extinction for conservation by our member gardens. BGCI uses Red List information in monitoring and supporting ex situ collections of threatened plant species around the world. Red List activities also directly contribute to the Global Trees Campaign, a joint initiative led by BGCI and Fauna & Flora International (FFI). Working with partners, tree species identified as threatened through GTA are often targeted for a variety of conservation projects.

BGCI offers Red List training through the GTA, building capacity for plant conservation from the very first stages of identifying threatened species and helping to build accessible information on threatened plant species online. We work with BGCI’s membership of over 700 botanic gardens and related institutions to promote plant Red List assessments and their use in conservation planning and public education.
