Team Manager - Otari Native Botanic Garden and Wilton's Bush Reserve

Ōtari is the only Botanic Garden in New Zealand dedicated solely to native plants. Ōtari ‘s plant collections contain about 1,200 species, hybrids and cultivars from across New Zealand. As well as the 5ha of cultivated collections, Ōtari consists of 95ha of native bush, the largest intact bush remnant left in Wellington. It also has a plant nursery where seedlings of threatened species are raised and kept in the Garden for conservation or returned to the wild in conservation recovery programmes. Then there is the Lions Plant Conservation Laboratory which provides staff with facilities to conduct essential research into propagation and long term storage of New Zealand’s threatened plants. Ōtari is part of the Capital City’s Wellington Gardens group which includes Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paekākā, Bolton Street Cemetery ki Paekākā and Truby King Park. Wellington Gardens is committed to growing and communicating with plants for conservation, health and well being, culture and heritage, education and amenity and landscape. Otari is a Green Flag garden and an RNZIH Garden of International Significance.
You would lead a dedicated team and have a collaborative approach to make best use of complementary skills within the wider Council to oversee an integrated and visitor minded operation. You must be highly skilled at building and maintaining relationships. A key part of this role is working alongside other organisations, volunteers and the wider community to deliver the best outcomes for New Zealand’s native plants and visitors to Ōtari.

You will need to demonstrate leadership behaviours in all that you do, and inspire others to help you achieve your vision. You will model Council’s and the Gardens’ team values which include building our people, honesty and integrity, putting people at the heart of what we do and working together.
To be eligible for this role you must be permanent New Zealand resident and you will have a full, clean Class 1 driver’s licence. You will agree to complete both drug and alcohol screening and a musculoskeletal assessment.
