About the Cliveden

Large 18th-century landscape magnificently sited high on an escarpment overlooking the Thames Valley. Contains a sequence of historical garden styles: early amphitheatre of 1732 and avenues and rides by Charles Bridgeman, temple and pavilion by Giacomo Leoni, parterre in 18th-century French style, Long Garden with topiary and hedges of 1900, wall shrubs, herbaceous borders in Gertrude Jekyll style, water garden in Eastern style from 1900, Secret Garden designed by Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1959, now planted with grasses and herbaceous perennials. Fountains, sculpture and statuary mostly introduced by the Astor family from 1894. "Hanging Woods" under restoration. Woodland walks and river frontage.
