Zoos Help Save Threatened Rainforest

The project aims to save an area of threatened Atlantic rainforest north of Rio de Janeiro covering 15000 hectares. Only a fraction of the original Atlantic rainforests survive but they still  support more than 8,000 species of plants and many unique animal species indigenous only to this area. The plan is to link two existing reserves to extend this vital habitat and reintroduce species that have become extinct in the area.

The Director of BIAZA, Dr Miranda Stevenson said: "We are very enthusiastic about this project, because it shows that zoos and aquariums can play an important role in conserving wildlife not only in zoos, but also in the wild".

The project will be overseen by international conservation charity World Land Trust who are based in the UK, along with its partners in Brazil.
