Worldwide > Conserving Threatened Magnolia Species
Conserving Threatened Magnolia Species
BGCI is therefore launching a new project focusing on the Critically Endangered and Endangered species which face the greatest threat of extinction in the wild. We want to ensure that the most threatened species are held in ex situ collections as insurance against extinction in the wild. We have already undertaken a preliminary assessment of magnolia species held in collections and this has revealed significant gaps in species coverage. As a result we are now launching a detailed survey to establish exactly which Critically Endangered and Endangered species are not yet held in ex situ collections. This information will enable us to take action to ensure that integrated conservation measures for these species are developed. Our project’s priorities include developing carefully planned ex situ collections and propagation techniques for Critically Endangered species. The potential restoration in their natural habitats will also be explored. This project is part of a wider programme addressing the conservation of all Critically Endangered plant species. These species face the threat of extinction which would adversely affect our environment and directly weaken the resilience of our planet to respond to environmental changes. It is imperative that we address this threat; after all, it is plant species that harness the sun’s energy and maintain ecosystems for all life. Please contact us directly to find out how your organisation can help us take urgent action to ensure the future survival of all magnolia species. We would also be delighted to discuss how you can get involved in our broader programme to conserve the world's Critically Endangered plants.
Red List of the MagnoliaceaeThe Red List of the Magnoliaceae, published jointly by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and Fauna & Flora International (FFI), through the Global Trees Campaign (GTC), identifies 131 wild magnolias as being in danger of extinction, from a global total of 245 species.
Magnolia ImagesOver half the world’s magnolia species are close to extinction in the wild, says a new report from BGCI and Fauna and Flora International. We've gathered some pictures.
Press Release: MagnoliasMagnolias may be blooming in Britain’s gardens this spring, but in the wild it’s an altogether different story. Over half the world’s magnolia species are facing extinction in their native forest habitats, according to an authoritative new report from BGCI and Fauan and Flora International. Where to see Magnolias in the UK and BeyondThese UK botanic gardens have told BGCI they have notable collections of Magnoliaceae. Sponsorship OpportunitiesThrough a partnership with BGCI, your organisation can help create a world in which plants are valued, secure and supporting all life. Depending on your organisation's interests you can become involved in a specific project or a particular aspect of our work. |
Global Magnoliaceae Survey
Does your botanic garden grow threatened Magnolias? If it does, BGCI is very interested to hear from you as we are conducting a global survey which will be used by the Global Trees Campaign to initiate integrated measures to restore wild populations and strengthen ex situ collections. |
