Botanic gardens linking biodiversity with human well-being is one of the six core themes of BGCI's work. Plant diversity provides goods and services which underpin human well-being: BGCI believes that the global network of botanic gardens can play a key role in using this diversity to improve human well-being. Botanic Gardens: Using Biodiversity to Improve Human Well-beingA report has been launched by BGCI on the role of botanic gardens in using plant diversity to improve human well-being. It features case studies from botanic gardens around the world and is available to all in PDF format.
CITES and Medicinal Plants Study: A Summary of FindingsBGCI is working to link plant conservation with improvements in human well-being through a new project for threatened medicinal species to help ensure on-going access to vital plant resources. The National Bamboo Mission under the Science and Tech Ministry is testing bullet proof jackets made of bamboo. These jackets weigh just 5kg and are also much cheaper than conventional ones. They are also experimenting with igloos made of bamboo, for protecting troops at high altitude. WORLDWIDE
