Global conservation assisted by British Airways
The international scope of our work and of BGCI’s membership network dictates occasional travel by our staff. This has been generously supported for over 15 years through the donation of international flights by British Airways. British Airways has donated flights to BGCI enabling a variety of projects to be supported. Last year, BGCI won a contract to provide advice on the development of two Qu’ranic Botanic Gardens in the United Arab Emirates. With the support of BA, BGCI staff were able to assess the merits of two botanic garden Master plans for Doha and Sharjah in the Arabian Peninsula. It is hoped that these gardens will serve as models for further Qur’anic gardens as part of an Arabian Network concerned with conserving native flora and environmental education in the Arab region. Most recently, Sara Oldfield, BGCI’s Secretary General, was able to chair a workshop hosted by the Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. The workshop enabled BGCI’s in-country partners and community representatives to develop new methodologies that will enable the conservation of identified nutritional and medicinal plants that are both threatened and of huge value to communities. This forms part of BGCI’s wider Wild Plants for Food and Medicine project, which is also active in Madagascar and Southeast Asia. BA’s route network connects the world. Through the generous provision of flights for our staff, the airline is enabling a real difference to be made in advancing global plant conservation.
