Welcome to BGCI SE AsiaSoutheast Asia is a biodiversity hotspot that harbours numerous iconic species such as the giant corpse lily (the world’s tallest inflorescence), Rafflesia (the world’s largest flower), and is the center of diversity for insectivorous pitcher plants and Vireya rhododendrons. Botanic gardens have a vital role to play in conserving the unique flora of the region and in educating the public about the importance of plant diversity. An exhibition on sustainable development and environmental conservation was organized and conducted at the Research Institute of Science (RIS), Prime Minister’s Office, Vientiane, from January 13-20, 2006. This was the first of its kind in the country. SINGAPORE

The Singapore Botanic Gardens graciously hosted a historic meeting of South East Asian botanic gardens from 30th to 31st January, 2004. This was the first official gathering of botanic gardens in the region, and has resulted in the formation of a new network - the South East Asia Botanic Gardens. EAST JAVA, INDONESIA

A second training course for Indonesian teachers under the Investing in Nature Programme was held at the Purwodadi Botanic Gardens in East Java, Indonesia. Three topics were discussed and the outputs will be fed into the development of future education programmes at the gardens. |
