Conference Proceedings: Beauty of Sourcing with Respect 2011
25th May 2011
On May 5, the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) organized the third edition of its "Beauty of Sourcing with Respect" conference. Over 120 participants from cosmetics companies, international organizations, governments, civil society organizations and academia met in Paris to discuss the strategic importance of biodiversity for business. The conference also focused on the recently adopted Nagoya Protocol on access and benefit sharing, and its possible implications for companies working with natural ingredients. The conference featured presentations by Braulio Dias, Secretary of Biodiversity and Forests at the Ministry of Enviroment of Brazil; Valerie Normand, Programme Officer for Access and Benefit Sharing at the CBD Secretariat; and Laurie Bennett, Head of Strategy at Futerra Sustainability Communications. There was input in panels and discussions from companies such as L'Oréal, Amorepacific, Natura, Guerlain, Weleda, Beraca and Aldivia. The report of the conference, as well as background documents on sourcing biodiversity in Africa, navigating ABS legislation in Brazil, the case of Argan oil in Morocco and other topics, are now available on the UEBT website: http://www.ethicalbiotrade.org/conferences/paris2011.html |
