The World of Palms

Exhibition and Palm path, Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem

Palms - most people associate these iconic plants with the tropics, vacation and wanderlust. For botanists, the Palmae, also known as Arecaceae, is actually one of the most exciting and diverse plant families. Palms can be found in subtropical and tropical regions of all continents. They have been systematically collected, described, classified, investigated and displayed in conservatories and museum collections for more than two centuries. The use of palms by humans dates back to ancient times. Human colonization of the islands in the Pacific would not have been possible without them. Today, palm products are indispensable for our daily lives.

Scientists are still working on capturing and explaining the diversity of palms. This exhibition, staged by the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, showcases our current state of knowledge concerning the biodiversity of this spectacular plant family. Fascinating photographs as well as botanical, zoological and ethnographical objects, rare books and art objects from the RBG Kew and BGBM collections and other Berlin collections are on display. Check your power of observation and determine the most important leaf forms in palms or investigate the diversity of palm products in our daily lives in the miniature shop. Play the „palm-shopping-game“ with your family (ages 5 and up) and discover the rich collection of living palms in the garden´s conservatories and open space while walking the 21 stations of our „palm path“.

Die Welt der Palmen

Ausstellung und Palmenpfad im Botanischen Garten und Botanischen Museum Berlin-Dahlem

Palmen gelten für viele Menschen als Inbegriff von Tropen, Urlaub und Fernweh. Für die Botaniker bilden die Palmae oder Arecaceae eine der spannendsten und diversesten Pflanzenfamilien überhaupt. Sie sind auf allen Kontinenten in tropischen und subtropischen Regionen anzutreffen und werden seit zwei Jahrhunderten planmäßig besammelt, beschrieben, klassifiziert, erforscht und in Gewächshäusern und Museen ausgestellt. Sehr viel länger werden Palmen vom Menschen vielfältig genutzt. Sie bildeten die Voraussetzung für die Eroberung und Besiedlung der Inselwelt Ozeaniens. Heutzutage sind Palmenprodukte aus unserem täglichen Leben nicht mehr wegzudenken.

Die Erfassung und Erklärung der Mannigfaltigkeit von Palmen ist bis heute nicht abgeschlossen. Diese vom Botanischen Garten und Botanischen Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM) in Zusammenarbeit mit den Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew bei London (RBG Kew) erarbeitete Ausstellung zeigt den derzeitigen Stand unseres Wissens über die Biodiversität dieser spektakulären Pflanzenfamilie.
Zu sehen sind neben spektakulären Bildern auch botanische, zoologische und ethnographische Objekte, kostbare Bücher und Kunstgegenstände aus den Sammlungen der RBG Kew, den Beständen des BGBM und weiterer Berliner Sammlungen. Testen Sie ihre Beobachtungsgabe bei der Bestimmung der wichtigsten Blattformen von Palmen und erkunden Sie im „Kaufladen“ die Vielfalt von Palmenprodukten in unserem Alltag. Spielen sie mit ihrer Familie das extra für die Ausstellung entworfene „Palmen-Einkaufsspiel“ (ab 5 Jahren) und entdecken sie an 21 Stationen unseres „Palmenpfads“ im Freiland und in den Gewächshäusern die reiche Palmensammlung des Botanischen Gartens.
