The pioneering centre, which cost £82m, will help scientists explore climate change, food supplies and the search for sustainable fuel.

It was built with a grant from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

"We are truly grateful. Plant biology is a science which is critical for our planet," said Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz.

The building will also be home to the university's herbarium, a collection of more than one million pressed and dried plants from all over the world, including many collected by Charles Darwin.
