Success: Renewed Global Strategy for Plant Conservation adopted

BGCI is celebrating the adoption of a renewed and strengthened Global Strategy for Plant Conservation at COP10 in Nagoya. The two week conference also saw the launch of our report showing the progress in 2010 towards one of the key targets in the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC). 

After the conference was complete and the new GSPC adopted, Suzanne Sharrock - Botanic Gardens Conservation International’s Director of Global Programmes who attended the Nagoya meeting said:

“We’re delighted with the international consensus on the higher targets for the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. The protection of plant species and habitats is critical for human wellbeing and prosperity.  We call on Governments to provide sufficient resources for plant conservation so that their new commitments aren’t empty promises. BGCI will be focusing on producing a GSPC toolkit to help countries achieve the new targets.” 

 

On Thursday 21 October, during the first week of the conference we made a presentation to the assembled Government representatives. Botanic Gardens Conservation International and all those who've joined the Plants for the Planet pledge, were calling for the targets in the GSPC to be renewed and strengthened.
