Plant science research in botanic gardens

2009 is an auspicious year for some of the world’s most venerable botanic gardens and arboreta. The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew celebrate their 250th anniversary, with the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Singapore Botanic Gardens celebrating their 150th anniversary. In terms of mainstream plant science today, however, botanic gardens are often neglected. The papers in the Special Issue November 2009 of Trends in Plant Science provide some insight as to how plant science research in botanic gardens offers great potential towards plant-based problem-solving relevant to improving human welfare.
