The Director of Cangshan Monutain Protection and Administration Bureau of Dali Bai Nationality Autonomous Prefecture asked Cangshan Monutain Protection and Administration Bureau of Yangbi County to collaborate with the Institute of Botany in the Acer yangbiense conservation project, he also suggested 6 ways to conserve this species:
1. Conserve administrively: It means all leaders should take the conservation of this species into account; especially in situ conservation;
2. Raise the public awareness of protecting this species;
3. Establish an isolation zone for protecting this species to prevent forest firing;
4. Arrange security personnel as soon as possible;
5. Protect leagally: they already made a legislation to protect this species;
6. Establish small protection area: if this species is not within protection area, they will establish small protection area.
But, they also pointed out the difficulties in protecting this species, such as the confliction between the conservation and utilization, the distinct confliction between the conservation and local people’s living, the confliction between the consevation task and the government invest, the Cangshan Mountain is open and all villages are inside the nature reserve, so their lives seriously depend on the Cangshan Mountain, etc.
On 21 August 2008, accompanied by Chen Yousheng, Cangshan Mountain Protection and Administration Bureau of Yangbi County invited forest police, forest protection and fire prevention office, natural resources management station and forest station of Yangbi and the head of that village made an on-the-spot investigation of all the four trees of Acer yangbiense in Cangshan Mountain.
The four trees of Acer yangbiense are just beside a small village with 13 families. They found two trees did not have any fruits this year. Because of their artificial pollination, the biggest tree fruits very well this year and they have good hope to get a lot of seeds this Autumn. In the afternoon, all 13 families of this village sat together and discussed on how to protect this species. Officials from different departments gave great importance to this species and told the local people that this species is the most rare and endangered trees in the world and they must try their best to protect them well. They are very happy and proud that the species Acer yangbiense was named after their county name, which will be a great honour for the people from Yangbi county.
