Death of a Russian Academician
MOSCOW, RUSSIA
11th April 2006
The Russian Academy of Sciences "Professor Lev Andreev was the Chairman of the Council of Botanical Gardens of Russia and a member of Russian Academy of Sciences. Starting as a post graduate student in 1954 he worked tirelessly at the Moscow Main Botanical Garden. From 1981-2002 as its Director, he gave all his energy and enthusiasm to the Garden. He contributed a lot towards the development of Moscow Main Botanical Garden to make it a leading institution among Russian botanic gardens and towards maintaining its high international profile. In 1984, Professor Lev Andreev was elected to the board of the European-Mediterranean Division of International Association of Botanic Gardens (IABG) and later in 1986 as the IABG vice-president. He was also the Russian coordinator of the bilateral exchange program between Russian and American botanists for the past 30 years. Lev Andreev was the vice-president of the Russian Botanical Society and up to the end was the Editor-in-Chief for the General Biology Scientific Journal. We have lost an outstanding researcher, enthusiastic science organizer and simply a kindhearted person and reliable friend. He will be sorely missed both on a professional and a personal level, and we will remember him always." Moscow Main Botanical Garden, |
