Brazil Announces Massive New Protection for AmazonBRAZIL
6th April 2006
From Michael Astor, Associated Press Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced massive new protections for the Amazon, as the United Nations held its Conference of the Parties ("CoP") biodiversity meeting in Brazil. The Brazilian government announced that 84,000 square miles of the Amazon rain forest - an area about the size of Kansas - will be declared a protected zone over the next three years. However, some conservationists fear this may not be preservation in an intact state, but instead could lead to "sustainable" logging. |
