About the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens

The Jerusalem Botanical Gardens is the largest and most important botanical garden in Israel. It comprises around 10000 plant species, which were brought to Israel from all over the world and are being preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.

The plants are displayed in six sections, each designed to create a miniature landscape of the region of origin of the plants.

The School of Garden and Landscape Studies of the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens operates professional courses on various gardening and environmental subjects in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Jerusalem Botanical Garden operates enrichment programs for school children - from kindergarten to secondary school - on diverse subjects dealing with nature and preservation of the environment.

About MASHAV

Israel's Centre for International Cooperation, known as MASHAV in its Hebrew acronym, was founded in 1958 as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is responsible for initiating and implementing Israel's development cooperation program worldwide. MASHAV aims at transferring the expertise and technologies which has assisted Israel in its own path to development to order countries. Today, Israel cooperates with over 140 countries, providing training in Israel and abroad, as well as operating projects in partner countries. About CINADCO

The Centre for International Agricultural Development Cooperation (CINADCO) is a part of the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Since 1958 CINADCO has been in charge of the International Agricultural program conducted in Israel and abroad by MASHAV. CINADCO's activities consist of international and country tailor made courses in Israel on-the-spot courses abroad, long and short termed projects and advisory missions.

Israeli experts have also been sent to different locations around the world to conduct projects and to share the expertise in various aspects of agricultural production, extension, planning and organization.

The Course

Aims

The course objective is to introduce plant conservation through management and sustainable use of plant diversity in Mediterranean climate regions. It is in our view that the role of botanical gardens can and should be increased by raising public awareness of these matters through education. The Jerusalem Botanical Gardens decided to take part in the innovative framework for action in the global and regional levels by this initiative.

Requirements for Application and Admission

The course is designed for horticulturists, botanical garden curators, gardeners and conservationists. It is of special importance to participants from Mediterranean climatic regions and to the ones who engage with Mediterranean plant collections.

Candidates should have at least 2-3 years of experience in subjects related to the course. Good command of written and spoken English.

Completed applications together with the attached professional questionnaire , required documentation and medical form accurately completed and signed by a physician. should reach the Israeli Embassy at least 5 weeks before the beginning of the course.

Cost

The cost of the course is US$ 2000.

No scholarships are available. Candidates should find the appropriate sources of funding.

General information

Location

The course will be held in two main locations: The Jerusalem Botanical Gardens in the city of Jerusalem and CINADCO?s International Training Center at Bet Dagan Agricultural Complex near to the city of Rishon Letzion Acommodation will be in double rooms. Single rooms can be available with extra charge.

Methods of study

The course will be based on lectures, discussions and field trips related to each topic. A final paper related to the topic of the course will be prepared in groups by the participants and presented at the end of the course. The final paper should be based on actual data. Participants who have projects in mind should bring along the necessary and up to date basic information for this purpose. It is recommended to bring portable computer (if available).

Sightseeing

Sightseeing trips to sites of religious, historical and general interest will be held.

Arrival to Israel

The official opening of the course will be on April 5th, 2005. You are requested to schedule your arrival to Israel one day before the opening of the course. The "Tal Limousine" company will transport the participants free of charge from Ben Gurion Airport to Jerusalem. The desk of "Tal Limousine" at the airport is located at the arrivals hall on the middle floor (left side). There is no responsibility for the use of other means of transport.

Departure from Israel

The closing ceremony of the course will be on April 19th , 2005. You are requested to schedule your departure flight for the following day. The organizing institution's official responsibility is valid only for the duration of the course. Visits to other countries need to be scheduled after the closing of the course. All visas must be obtained in the participant's country prior departure to Israel.

Clothing

The course will be held during the springtime, when the weather in Israel is moderate. Temperatures may vary between 15?C and 25?C. It is recommended to bring warm and light clothes, appropriate shoes for field trips and bath suit.

Insurance

The participants will be medically insured by a Health Insurance Policy. This policy does not cover the treatment of chronic diseases, dental care, eyeglasses, the period of pregnancy and specific medications taken by the participant on a regular basis. Participants with Malaria record are requested to bring along the relevant medication.

Personal belongings such as video cameras, portable computers, jewelry, etc. will not be insured It is recommended to take up separate insurance for such items.
