Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, an accredited museum and National Historic Landmark, seeks a Historic Landscape Specialist. Vizcaya attracts nearly 200,000 visitors each year and is working to strengthen its profile as a cultural resource and a nationally recognized leader in public horticulture and cultural landscape management.
The position of Historic Landscapes Specialist will enable the furthering of Vizcaya’s horticultural mission through effective horticultural display and living collections management. The Historic Landscapes Specialist will be a critical part of the Horticulture team and a non-supervisory position reporting directly to the Chief Horticulturist. The Historic Landscapes Specialist will ensure the effective management of horticultural display related tasks including indoor landscapes, Vizcaya’s IPM program, and nursery management. The Historic Landscapes Specialist will ensure all the above are maintained to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens’ standards of horticultural display. The Historic Landscapes Specialist will additionally be developing Vizcaya’s living collections and Historic Tree programs with the assistance of and oversight from the Chief Horticulturist.
Minimum Qualifications: An Associate’s Degree in Ornamental, Landscape, or Public Horticulture or closely related field with two years’ progressively responsible experience in a public or historic garden setting is required. Candidates with less experience will be considered with a more advanced degree in these fields.
Additional Factors: Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. and work outside in varying climatic conditions including excessive heat and humidity. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to safely traverse uneven surfaces. The successful candidate must have experience using Microsoft Office and a working knowledge of or ability to learn BGBase software is desired. Candidates must be able to communicate clearly and directly to a widely varied group of staff, volunteers, and visitors, and have the ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends as required and requested. The successful applicant must have the ability to procure a FL driver’s license and FL Public Applicator license within 6 months of hire. Knowledge of subtropical and tropical flora is desirable but not required, and candidates must possess a good working knowledge of plant identification and nursery management methods.
Salary Range: $42,609 - 71,551
