Director of Development, Arnold ArboretumDirector of Development, Arnold Arboretum Harvard University Job Description: The Director of Development manages a four-person team including a communications and stewardship officer, a membership coordinator, a database specialist, and a gift processor. The Director of Development serves as a knowledgeable liaison and institutional representative to prospects and donors, and also to non-donor constituents in community groups, garden clubs, and non-profit educational and environmental organizations. S/He is responsible for developing and executing a long-term strategic plan to appropriately communicate the Arboretum's mission and secure outright and planned gifts for its programs. The position prepares briefings for the Director, Deputy Director and other staff prior to visits with prospects and donors, and manages travel and meetings of the Director and Deputy Director with prospects/donors. This position also maintains key relationships with the University Development Office staff and other development staff throughout the University. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and a minimum of seven years of progressive fundraising experience that includes staff management and a successful record of major gift solicitation through outright gifts or planned giving. Additional Qualifications: Experience at a non-profit or institution of higher education and strong interest in the mission of the Arnold Arboretum. Advanced degree in a related field preferred. Outstanding communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Proven ability to manage and motivate staff and collaborate with volunteers, staff and senior leadership. Occasional travel and some evening/weekend work required.
