The Job:
The 423ha Oman Botanic Garden is currently under construction in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman and is to become one of the world’s leading botanical gardens. We wish to appoint an Education Expert to be part of the senior management team.
Purpose:
Manage the education specialists’ team in developing, testing and delivering outreach and in-house programmes and associated materials for schools and other educational institutions.
Accountability: Oman Botanic Garden Education and Communication Department Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the education team in the creation and continuance of an effective education strategy and programme complementing the aims of the Oman Botanic Garden. Work with other departments to promote Oman Botanic Garden education provision through events, publications and training.
Involvement in human resources, recruitment and responsible for training for the education team, including ensuring the knowledge and understanding of flora and vegetation at the Oman Botanic Garden is up to date.
Create and review education strategies to guide the team’s work. Lead the education team to design, organise and run a series of adult learning workshops and events. Be fully aware of current developments and innovations in botanic gardens, environmental education, education for sustainable development, conservation education, through literature, attendance at conferences (presenting as appropriate), national and international training courses, visits to other research institutions/gardens, etc. Identify and procure materials, equipment and literature to meet the needs of the education team as required.
Provision of support for the Oman Botanic Garden Living Collections and Botany and Conservation Departments, which could include the delivery of training in education and communication techniques as required Attendance at Oman Botanic Garden meetings as required.
Applicants must have: A BSc. degree in biological sciences, environmental sciences, or plant sciences. Teacher trained, or equivalent, experience in a communication or education role with excellent understanding of pedagogy and the latest techniques in teaching and learning and educational psychology.
A minimum of 8 years in a medium to large-scale education facility; excellent knowledge and extensive practical experience of education management and strategic planning; very good inter-personal and proven record of management skills of a team of at least 10 staff; proficiency in standard computing software; and able to show initiative in independently solving complex.
Work experience possibly within an educational facility, with events and functions organisation or other large visitor facility is a pre-requisite. Candidates with experience in Botanic gardens will be given advantage.
The garden is seeking an imaginative strategic thinker with experience in operations and business planning and a commitment to service quality, to help lead Oman Botanic Garden into the next phase of growth and sustainability. This will be achieved through cross-functional integration, superior project resource deployment and process simplification, driving better, cost efficient operations across the organisation.
The post holder will need excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively as head of a team to help deliver the overall goals of the project, whilst being able to work independently with a high level of self-motivation and initiative.
