| Dear Cultivator, Conservation of the Rhododendron Species Photo: Flowering Rhododendron kanehirae, June 2011, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh BGCI has published The Red List of Rhododendrons, a survey of the conservation status of the Rhododendron species. Whilst we may be alarmed that a quarter of Rhododendron species are under threat, there is a good news story too. One species of Rhododendron, Rhododendron kanehirae has survived extinction due to ex situ conservation by botanic gardens, and it’s likely that without our work it would be lost forever. Unfortunately, it’s too late for Rhododendron retrorsipilum; it is now considered extinct. Our partners in the Red List of Rhododendrons report included the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. David Chamberlain, one of the report’s researchers, explained the story behind that most threatened Rhododendron species: “Rhododendron kanehirae is considered to be extinct in the wild, following flooding of the river banks around its only known natural locality in Northern Taiwan. This was caused by a dam that was built in 1984. However, an ex situ conservation project is being run by the Taiwan Endangered Species Research Institute. As a result of crucial international collaboration, plants have now been distributed to Botanic Gardens in Taiwan, Japan, the UK and the United States to ensure that this unique species has a future”.
