Target 16: Conservation Networks

Networks for Plant Conservation Activities Established or Strengthened at National, Regional and International Levels

Networks can enhance communication and provide a mechanism to exchange information, knowhow and technology.

Networks will provide an important component in the coordination of effort among many stakeholders for the achievement of all the targets of the strategy. They will also help to avoid duplication of effort and to optimise the efficient allocation of resources. Effective networks provide a means to develop common approaches to plant conservation problems, to share policies and priorities and to help disseminate the implementation of all such policies at different levels. They can also help to strengthen links between different sectors relevant to conservation, e.g. the botanical, environmental, agricultural, forest and educational sectors. Networks provide an essential link between on-the-ground conservation action and coordination, monitoring and policy development at all levels.

This target is understood to include the broadening of participation in existing networks, as well as the establishment, where necessary, of new networks.

Communication for Development
The Communication Initiative (The CI) network is an interactive website for economic and social development and change. They initiate dialogue and debate, and provide a forum for development workers to support each other, supported by online resources.

Bioversity International (formerly IPGRI)
Bioversity is an international research institute with a mandate to advance the conservation and use of genetic diversity for the well-being of present and future generations. It is a Centre of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research.

BioNET
BioNET is an international not-for-profit initiative dedicated to promoting taxonomy. Its Mission is to "contribute to human well-being and biodiversity conservation by building capacity to discover, name, and classify the world's living organisms."

The Species Survival Commission
IUCN's SSC is a science-based network of some 7,000 volunteer experts from almost every country of the world, all working together towards achieving the vision of “A world that values and conserves values and conserves present levels of biodiversity."

Planta Europa
Planta Europa is the Network of independent organisations, non-governmental and governmental, working together to conserve European wild plants and fungi. Their mission is to conserve the wild plants, both higher and lower, of Europe, and their habitats.

Botanic Gardens Conservation International

The National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens
The NCCPG supports 650 collections in Britain of cultivated (garden) plants, by encouraging (through it's members) the propagation and conservation of endangered garden plants in the British Isles (both species and cultivars). The remit includes research, history, cultural background, and education.

PlantNetwork
PlantNetwork, is the Britain and Ireland network of botanic gardens, arboreta and other documented plant collections. Acitivites include promoting botanical collections in Britain and Ireland as a national resource for research, conservation and education.

NatureServe
Providing the scientific basis for effective conservation, NatureServe and its network of natural heritage programs are the trusted source for information about rare and endangered species and threatened ecosystems in the Americas. Offers a searchable database of plants of the U.S. and Canada.

The Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation
The ATBC was founded in 1963. It is international in scope, membership, and objectives, functioning as a global body promoting research, education, conservation, and communication for tropical biology and to foster the exchange of ideas amongst tropical biologists. Membership offers many benefits,

The Global Crop Diversity Trust
An increasingly unpredictable and changing climate, and a world population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, will place unprecedented demands on agriculture. Our mission is to ensure the conservation and availability of crop diversity for food security worldwide.

European Bioinformatics Institute
The EBI is a centre for research and services in bioinformatics. The Institute manages databases of biological data including nucleic acid, protein sequences and macromolecular structures. They offer researchers free, unrestricted access to some of the world's most important biological databases.

Earthwatch Institute
Earthwatch Institute is an environmental charity which funds 130 field research projects in over 50 countries, recruiting people globally to work alongside conservation scientists on projects from saving leatherback sea turtles in Costa Rica, to monitoring climate change in the Arctic.

Global Trees Campaign
The Global Trees Campaign was established seven years ago to save the world's most extremely threatened trees and the habitats where they grow. Many of these trees are down to just a few individuals surviving. There are ways for everyone to get involved. Learn more on the GTC website.
