University of Zagreb Botanical Garden celebrates 125th anniversary
2014 marks the 125th anniversary of the University of Zagreb Botanical Garden. It is the oldest university botanic garden in Croatia, and since its establishment, has played an important role in teaching, research and botanical studies at the University.
The garden has always been open to the public without an entrance fee and is popular with locals and visitors alike – being the third most visited tourist site in Zagreb.
Today its activities are largely devoted to research, conservation of native plant species and public education. In 2011, the Garden launched the annual ‘Week of Croatian Botanic Gardens and Arboreta’ which has grown in popularity year by year.
The 125th anniversary is being marked by a series of events and activities, including a meeting of the European Botanic Gardens Consortium, a ceremony at the University and the launch of special commemorative stamp by Croatia Post.
