Towards a National Botanic Garden in Haiti

From 23-25th October 2011 an International Workshop was held in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on the Role of a National Botanic Garden in the Rebuilding of Haiti.
The Workshop was organized by the National Committee for the establishment of a National Botanic Garden in Haiti, supported by CONHANE and the Ministry of Tourism, Government of Haiti.
During the Workshop the participants considered ideas, priorities, recommendations and options for the establishment of a National Botanic Garden in Haiti. The participants noted that the establishment of such a new national institution would be an important contribution to the United Nations’ Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020), as well as contributing to the achievement of
• the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity of the Convention on Biological Diversity
• the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation
• the National Agricultural Investment Plan, and
• the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of Haiti.
The Participants declared that the roles of a new National Botanic Garden in Haiti would be diverse, multi-faceted and aimed at meeting national needs in a wide range of sectors and disciplines.
