European Union Launches Climate Change Campaign
6 September 2006
The slogan is:
Turn down. Switch off.
A giant poster affixed to the EC's main building in Brussels was unveiled on 31 May, showing the Earth with a thermostat attached. The poster says: "You control climate change". "Turn down. Switch off. Recycle. Walk."
Similar posters and other advertising are being unveiled in every other EU capital, while statues in EU capitals — such as Brussels' Manneken Pis — will be wearing T-shirts with the same message.
TV and newspaper advertising will also spread the message, while comprehensive information can be found on the campaign website www.climatechange.eu.com.
The website gives 50 tips on how the public can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
EU member state governments are also launching the campaign at a national level and supporting it through various activities. Pop stars, bands and TV weather presenters will also participate in the campaign.
"For the Commission, action against climate change is a priority. This campaign complements and reinforces our political and legislative efforts," EC President José Manuel Barroso said.
"It makes clear to which extent we all are responsible for climate change and what individuals can and need to do to limit this threat."
EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas added: "People may say that their individual behaviour does not matter; I say — on the contrary: households in the EU count for a large part of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions, so each of us has a role to play in bringing down emissions".
The EU campaign has a budget of EUR 4.7 million and while the website will be available permanently, the campaign will be carried out in three concentrated waves — in June, September and November 2006.
