Plants for the Planet Resource CD launched by BGCI
BGCI is pleased to announce a new resource, sent out to members this month. A CD-ROM, "Plants for the Planet: Resource Pack for Botanic Gardens", allows members without fast internet connections to access and download a wide variety of useful material. It contains key BGCI and policy documents, such as the Environmental Education in Botanic Gardens guidelines, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, the Darwin Technical Manual for Botanic Gardens and the International Agenda for Botanic Gardens in Conservation.
One main feature of the CD is that many of the documents included are in several languages - English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and German. The CD provides members with back issues of "Roots", the education review, including editions on interpretation, teacher training, planting for education, ethnobotany and adult education. "Plants for the Planet" also contains proceedings from all the international congresses for botanic garden education, including the most recent "Connecting with Plants: Lessons for Life", Sydney, 2002.
The CD also features the new publication from BGCI - "Education for Sustainable Development: guidelines for action in botanic gardens". This publication explores what botanic gardens have to offer ESD and the challenges they face, it also recognises that botanic gardens have the potential to become models for sustainability and offers a process by which this may be realised. This document is particularly pertinent to education in botanic gardens as we enter the first year of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
The minimum specification to run the CD ROM is Windows 95. It is hoped that "Plants for the Planet: Resource Pack for Botanic Gardens" will provide an easily accessible source of relevant documents for botanic gardens all over the world. Additional copies can be requested via our website costing £12.00 for members or £18.00 for non members plus postage and packing (£1.00 Europe,£2.00 rest of world).
Any feedback, comments or queries about the CD are very welcome, please contact us through email@example.com.
